A Split 'n' Share Success Story

Last night, we got an exciting shipment: a split quarter of grass-fed beef. There was eye round, sirloin tip, rib roast, porterhouse steak - all to share among five members.

The organizing was simple. I posted a notice at the HVFN Split 'n' Share group, several people responded and we emailed through the site. I put down a deposit at the… Continue

Ulster County will hold hearings this week to discuss the proposed budget for 2010. Among items on the chopping block is funding for the Cornell Cooperative Extension. It Takes A Village To Make A Sausage

Two pigs, thirty people, a lot of sausage.

During a two-day workshop at Mead Orchards in Tivoli, NY, butcher Bryan Maher and chef Daniel Meyer of Brooklyn's The Green Grape taught a village about preparing hog from head to tail. The weekend's menu included pork belly braised in milk and honey, Northeastern picadillo with apples and dates, and breakfast with apple fritters fried in pork lard.

The Greenhorns, a nonprofit film project about young farmers, and Smithereen Farm sponsored the event.

too good to waste

I just canned several jars of spiced seckel pears. In the past, the syrup was just barely adequate to cover the jarred fruit, so this time I increased that part of the recipe. As a result I had ab...

Who's Who: Kevin Cahill, state assemblyman

In the month before the 2008 elections, I spent a few good hours talking with Assemblyman Kevin Cahill. I interviewed him about property taxes, education funding and bringing green business to the Hudson Valley. But the story I most often re-tell from those conversations is about food.

Cahill told me that every morning he eats a… Continue

Who's Who: Sheilah Davidson, policy director for School Food FOCUS

Sheilah Davidson had to cut a deal with her 12-year-old daughter. Some days her daughter brings lunch to school and others she gets to buy it. "She would much rather eat the food that they serve, but we like to limit a lot of processed stuff," Davidson says.

Davidson is the policy director of an
